'kde' is just a metapackage. You should be able to install most of the
bits of it independently. In unstable it has:
Package: kde
Depends: fontconfig, kde-core, kde-amusements, kdeaddons, kdeadmin, kdeartwork, kdegraphics, kdemultimedia, kdenetwork, kdepim, kdeutils, koffice, quanta
So try installing those (replacing kde-core with arts, kdelibs, and
kdebase), and see which individual bits fail.
