Strange console font problem

When I boot my debian system (running testing), the bootloader (GRUB)
menu fails to appear - only a blank screen. The menu is there however,
as I can select menu items with the appropriate number of down-arrow
keypresses.

On selecting Linux, a few lines are printed, including the message that
the kernel is being uncompressed, and then the screen prints very oddly.
All characters are printed, but each character has extra dots added.
Once the system is booted and I run X, all is fine. But if I switch to a
console (ctrl-alt-F1), every character position, whether it contains
text or not, has a vertical line of dots (perhaps 8 per-character
position).

Can anyone suggest a cure?
Thanks in advance
