Thanks; good suggestion. I then encountered the problem that neither
/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum nor X.md5sum were present, which
produced an error message. I therefore copied them from another machine,
which solved the error message, but I still couldn't generate a new
XF86Config-4.

However, I seem to have done it with XFree86 -configure (see my reply to
Colin in this thread).
