Entering this really late, and by no means a kernel-expert.

However, I seem to recall the original post mentioned the KT400 
chipset.  I never could get this to work properly with any kernel 
prior to 2.4.22.  I do know that I have used this net card without 
problem with all flavors of the 2.4.xx kernel series on a different 
machine.

Not sure if this will be helpful or not.
