hmm... Seems pretty obvious. Don't know how I missed that one. 

Lsmod now shows "printer" as being loaded, but restarting the printer
produces the same error message (except that it sequentially increases
the address number it's trying, with each attempt - it's now up to
"address=13").

Any more suggestions?
