i bet that this works  ( assuming the kernel has been told by grub/lilo
the hdc=ide-scsi option )

	mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

and if it does ...  make a link
	cd /dev ; ln -s ./hdc cdrom	( for reading cd's )
	cd /dev ; ln -s ./hdc cdrw	( for writing )

well, i could at any time easily mount the cd/dvd in the drive using /dev/hdc.
the boot-loader is configured properly (hdc=ide-scsi).
the /dev/cdrom link is already there, /dev/cdrw did not bring me much further: what i am still missing is the appearance of the drive in the ouput of #cdrecord -scanbus. so i can not access it for writing cds.
