You could try:
antgel $ sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager
Password:
There are 2 alternatives which provide `x-window-manager'.
Selection Alternative

*+ 1 /usr/bin/metacity
2 /usr/bin/icewm
Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number:
However this didn't work for me until I did an apt-install gnome. Not
sure what I was missing prior to that.
