If your root fs is ext3 you should have ext3 built into the kernel, not as a module. (If you build it as a module, you need to use an initrd, which isn't worth the hassle.) I'm not quite sure what you've done, but if you forced e2fsck to fsck an ext3 filesystem as ext2 with a dirty journal it's probably screwed the filesystem beyond recovery.
