Interesting idea. Try adding the line "echo $0" to all relevant files in
/etc/ and in $HOME/
Those should perhaps be:

   $HOME/.bash_profile
   $HOME/.bashrc
   $HOME/.profile
   /etc/bash.bashrc
   /etc/bash_completion
   /etc/environment
   /etc/profile
   (any others?)

Then you should be able to see a 'trace' of the login process...
