Two reasons, first, thus your IMAP user name and password won't travel in clear text, second, you can enable compression, if the server is slow. set tunnel = "ssh -C -q username@your.imap.server /usr/sbin/imapd" For me, compression was the difference between do and don't. Of course, for this example to work, your public key should be already provisioned at username@your.imap.server:.ssh/authorized_keys.
