Eric,

You are trying to run the file
/proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe.  That's doesn't make sense.
More fundamentally, execute permissions are probably not set on that
file (do ls -l and look for any "x"s in the first set of letters).

You probably want to do:

cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe

instead.

PS -- you are cross-posting to two lists -- doing this a lot without
cause may be considered a tad unnecessary.  Also, you didn't change the
subject of your mail when asking a new question; this may cause people
to miss your new question or read your new question when they didn't
want to.  On the general linux front, you may want to pick up a good
linux book (perhaps
