You're wrong there. Non-native speakers are more likely to
understand English which deviates from the first language norm.
While vague in his or her description, the OP made perfect sense
to me, and I learned English only at school. Let's not blame on
English what's clearly a newbie-to-geek communication problem.

I suspect the OP was using some GUI-based, probably
wizard-oriented, audio configuration tool. We can safely
conclude that the OP's running either KDE or Gnome.
