lpd doesn't work

Without knowing better, I installed printtool and the required packages
(lpr-ppd, printfilters-ppd, ...).

printtool didn't detect my printer at the parallel port (but it is there,
the required 'alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc' is in modules.conf and
copying a text file to /dev/lp0 prints it. Nevertheless, I found my
printer (Epson Stylus Color 740) in the list and installed it.

The resulting /etc/printcap file is

##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL uniprint 720x1440 a4 {} EpsonStylusColor740 Default {}
lp:\
	:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
	:mx#0:\
	:sh:\
	:lp=/dev/lp0:\
	:if=/usr/lib/printfilters/master-filter:\
	:PAPERSIZE=a4:\
	:DESIRED_TO=ps:\
	:PRINTER_TYPE=LOCAL:\
	:ASCII_TO_PS=YES:\
	:GSDEVICE=uniprint:\
	:RESOLUTION=720x1440:\
	:PS_SEND_EOF=NO:\
	:NUP=1:\
	:RTLFTMAR=18:\
	:TOPBOTMAR=18:\
	:TEXT_SEND_EOF=NO:

Now even printing a simple text file doesn't work!

'lpr mytext.txt'

only results in an email to me:

Could not find requested printer:
Could not find requested printer:
Could not find requested printer:
Could not find requested printer:
No way to print this type of input file: ASCII text

The print job is not stuck in the queue. 'lpq' responds with 'no entries'.

'lpc status' says:

lp:
	queuing is enabled
	printing is enabled
	no entries
	no daemon present

but lpd _is_ running. 'ps -C lpd' prints:

  PID TTY TIME CMD
  394 ? 00:00:00 lpd

Am I missing something fundamental, or lpd simply doesn't work?

I found the same complaint on the web, but no solution.
