use the update-rc.d command, to stop the display managers from starting, 
i used the following command:
   # update-rc.d -f ?dm remove stop 1 2 3 4 5 6
where the question mark is g, k, or x depending on which is starting at 
boot.

use the install disk and go into rescue mode.
