DNS works by delegation.  First the TLD[1] ".com" is delgated to some
server.  That server either handles "mydomain.com" (or whatever) or
delegates that to the authoritative server for that domain.  This
hierarchical delegation can descend as deep as you wish.  If authority
for mydomain.com is delegated to your DNS server, then simply keeping
that server up-to-date will allow the world at large to identify the
nodes in your (sub)domain.  If, however, someone else is providing
your DNS service (and they, not you, have been delegated authority for
the domain) then you will need to make arrangements with them for
keeping the zone up-to-date.
