This is fixable. See a post called "Fun with python-apt" by Anthony
DeRobertis (asd@suespammers.org) to debian-devel which describes how
to fix the problem. Worked for me. The google group url is

(sorry, had to break up the url, silly slrn).

Alternatively, you could backport apt 0.5.8 (which seems quite stable)
to sarge. This should make the problem go away. Also worked for me.
