Indeed, that is true. But somewhere during my troubleshooting, manually 
ejecting the cd started to work. Then I posted the above to debian-user. 
Since then I powered down/up my machine, now I'm back to the original 
problem.

The drive is one, maybe two years old at the most.  And, yes it ejects 
just fine in Windows.
