You installed the source code not the kernel image. So you either need
to compile the kernel[1] or install a precompiled kernel image[2].

[1] apt-get install kernel-package, then read the docs in
/usr/share/doc/kernel-package.

[2] apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.20-xxx
