I'm sort of hoping the listmaster will see this.  

Unique subscribed addresses is probably the best way to estimate the number.

I'm also wondering how this number compares with the number of unique IP
addresses that have downloaded the install CDs.

I'm not sure that can be gathered accurately because of the mirrors.
