Hi,
the rcX.d directories are the 'runlevel' scripts. These
files are symbolic links to 'actual' scripts in /etc/init.d
It is rare that one would need to alter these.

If you want to run X directly (with your default login 
manager) you just tell linix to start at runlevel 5.
That can be done by edit the /etc/inittab script.

will fix it.

An improperly configured kernel may be the issue. I'm not an
