Short answer, Yes.

Please install Debian, and learn GNU/Linux. 

My advice, first get your hands on a Knoppix c.d. and boot from that, 
it will reasure you that the install can be done with the equipment 
you have.

Get a Debian GNU/Linux install disk.

Before you install, you will want to print the install instructions
and read before then several times before you begin.
