It's been a *long* time since I've done it for something other than a
kernel package (which is a different creature entirely when it comes
to building it), so if someone could correct me if/where I'm wrong...
apt-get build-dep <package>
apt-get source <package>
Save the debian/ directory, blow away everything else in the source
directory apt gave you. Apply the patch apt gave you. cd to the
source directory and do debian/rules binary and grab some coffee.
After it's done, you should have a nice .deb.
