hmm.. I didn't do the /etc/init.d/networking restart but I rebooted
the machine and nothing worked after that...

hmm... I just typed out the section which I added as the debian box
still doesn't have much running on it now... but just as I learn that
#!/sbin/sh is actually a command and not a comment, I'll try to post
everything later...

well, that ugly hack seems to be working quite well and shorewall is
running smoothly with it at the moment... anyway, I'm more than
willing to learn the right way and give it another go later...

when I boot with the 'faultly' interface, ifconfig gives a blank and
doesn't show anything including the loopback... I haven't tried the
ifup eth0 yet and will give it a go tomorrow when I get back at the
machine...
