One way to install j2re1.4 for testing/unstable version of mozilla (ie. it is compilled with gcc > 2.95)
1) add into /etc/apt/sources.list:
##
# blackdown java ... standard sources
deb ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.blackdown.org/java-linux/debian/ unstable main non-free
deb ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.blackdown.org/java-linux/debian/ testing main non-free
##
deb http://jopa.studentenweb.org/debian ./
// the last one is non standard apt-src, but it works now
2) apt-get update ...
3) apt-get install j2re1.4
4) apt-get install j2sdk1.4 # if you need it
