First, what graphics card are you using? If it's supported by DRI, then your 
chances are good to get framerates up.

Have a look at the output of 'glxinfo'. In the third line or so, it should 
read "direct rendering: Yes". If that's not so, check if you're loading the 
dri module. You might also have to load appropriate kernel modules for your 
AGP chipset and your graphics card.
