mdetect - ques about how to make use of this

Hi,

Since my X server for 3.0r1 failed to detect my serial
mouse, someone suggested I use 'mdetect'.

I read the man pages and tried:

% mdetect -ov

I get the following output:

Found the following devices:
/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS0 timeout

Questions:
1) My mouse in on COM1 (ttyS0), So, did it detect the
mouse or the timeout means it did not ? What does
timeout mean ?

2) What else could I try and verify that the mouse got
detected 

3) How do I know that the xf86config got updated with
the output of mdetect ?

Any help/pointer would be great.

I was moving the mouse while the test was going on as
per the man pages.
