kernel compile error - 2.4.18-bf2.4 to 2.4.20

hi all

I've had a look about but can only find info relating to other slightly
different error messages / kernel (PTrace patch problems).
I'm getting this error when trying to compile the 2.4.20 kernel, I currently
have the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel, but want to change it (sound issues).
The final output of the compile (fakeroot make-kpkg
--append-to-version=.210503 kernel_image) is:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.20/include -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common
-fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i386
-nostdinc -iwithprefix include -DKBUILD_BASENAME=ide_cd -c -o ide-cd.o
ide-cd.c
In file included from ide-cd.c:318:

I have everything up to date as far as I know.

ver_linux output is:

any thoughts anyone or has anyone come across a similar problem and can
point me in that direction.

Thanks
