1) Google for tomsrtbt and make a boot floppy.
2) Attach the new hdd as a slave.
3) Boot off the floppy.
4) Partition, format, and mount the new hdd (lets assume its
	/mnt/newhdd)
5) Go to the root of the old hdd, and do a 
	'pax -w . | ( cd /mnt/newhdd ; pax -r -p e )'
6) Remove the old hdd and make the new hdd master.
7) Boot off tomsrtbt one last time, mount and chroot the new hdd and 
	run lilo.
8) Reboot.

(Hey, it works for me).

More fun:  If your network card is generic enough, and you have a server 
somewhere, you can start a netcat session listening on the server, and 
saving its output to a file, and pipe pax to a netcat session.  Reverse 
for the new hdd.  I tend to upgrade laptop hdds that way.  :)
