this can be somewhat dangerous too. redhat currently provides at
least i386 and i686 binaries for libc. I read quite often on the redhat
list people that fry their systems by installing the wrong one(during
an upgrade). maybe it's just the way(location) that redhat stores the
files I'm not sure, but was quite suprised that upgrading libc to a
differently compiled version(e.g. installing i386 on a system that
previously had i686) would fry the system so bad(to the point of having
to boot from CD and install the other one)
