Caution: /initrd.img can be (probably often is on Debian) a symbolic link.  
If it is pointing to the initrd image from an older kernel image when a newer 
kernel image is being loaded then problems similar to this might arise.  
Generating a new initrd image is voodoo I'm still working on (make-kpkg 
--initrd is one option, the other is to use mkinitrd, and yet another is to 
build the file by hand??? - refer to kernel HOWTO for more info).  

Messing about with initrd is best left to package maintainers.  First spend 
your time getting your IDE and NIC driver compiled into your kernel so you 
don't have to use initrd.
