At the risk of being flamed to a crisp...
For me, Libranet was well worth the $64.95 - configuring Debian can result in loss of hair (because you to tear it out while screaming "How do I set up X!"). But running Debian might be valuable for the learning experience. Xandros is fine if you want something that's "just like Windows" (easy, slow, non-configurable), but can result in tendonitis from excessive mouse-clicking.
