Huh? Sudo doesn't care what the root password is:
rei $ ls -l `which sudo`
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 85592 2003-04-16 11:37 /usr/bin/sudo
It's already suid-root. That's how it does what it does.
It cares what YOUR password is. Your normal login password. Did you
change that one? :)
