sudo is acting up

Yesterday I changed the root password on my machine, but sudo will only
function with the OLD password for authentication. 'su -' and gnome-sudo will
only accept the new password, but regular old sudo on the command line doesn't
even recognize the new password.

I have tried restarting sudo '/etc/init.d/sudo restart', uninstalling (with
purge) and reinstalling, and changing the password back to the old one and then
back to the new one, but nothing works. Can someone shed some light on this?
