PPP help

Since I installed Woody over Potato, I'm unable to get
my modem connection to my Internet provider to work.

Here's the symptoms:

I can configure with pppconfig (as root) and get pon
to dial and connect to the provider. The provider
returns a local address, a remote address, and 2 DNS
server addresses. BUT, the browser cannot connect to
anyone.

If I ping the remote address, it responds. Bu the DNS
servers do not.

I can configure wvdial with wvdialconfig and get
wvdial to dial and connect, with same results as
above.

I'm using the peerdns option, and I can see that the
resolv.conf file is being written with the server
addresses provided by my internet provider.

So how come I can't ping them (shouldn't I be able
to)? And is that likely the reason why the browser
doesn't work?
