this is normal, the video playback program is writing directly to
the framebuffer of the videocard. this improves performance probably
50-100x. but also acts screwy when stuff is tried to be viewed on
top of it. turning off the extmod option probably disables DRI which
then the app cannot write directly to the videocard anymore and
performance goes through the floor and cpu usage through the roof.
I've seen this behavior on many platforms over the years, probably
going back to ...1996/97?
in my experience this behavior is normal.
