clearing search buffer in vim

a friend just asked me how, after searching for something in vim, to
clear the highlighting. i told him i usually just hit / and then
smash my fingers around on the home row for a bit[1], the result of
which inevitably doesn't match anything. is there a Better Way to do
this? how do most people clear the search buffer?

[1] it was interesting to see how the results of this home-row
smashing after switching from qwerty to dvorak -- now i get
something like /sntaoheunti or /ntohanthi, as opposed to
    /sadjfklasj or /kjsdfkjahg :)
