offtopic for this discussion, but ...kword (my installation at least (v1.1.1 on debian 3.0)) seems to be broken ...
It can save RTF but can't open it. RTF doesnt appear at all in the file type filter of the open dialogue box (MS Word does, though twice - neither of which is RTF in disguise). Is this a known bug?
