Hmm I don't think there is a package for a P4. Exactly which package
did you install?

eg

kernel-image-2.4.20-1-686

Sounds like it could be an initrd problem.

Do you have a line like 

initrd=/initrd.img

in the relevant section of your /etc/lilo.conf

Sorry I can't help more but I'm not so familiar with the stock Debian
kernels or initrd: I've been rolling my own for some time now.
