Switch From MD5 to DES

I have a Debian machine using MD5 encryption for passwords, and would like to
switch to DES passwords. The reason for this is I want to make it a Slave server
for NIS, and the Master Server is using DES.

>From what I've found it looks like I need to remove 'MD5_CRYPT_ENAB' from
/etc/login.defs and remove 'md5' from the 'password required' line in
/etc/pam.d/passwd (as well as removing various other MD5 references from files
in /etc). However, they aren't there to be removed.

Does anyone know how to make the switch? Let me know if you need to know any
more about the configuration of my system.

Thanks,
Rob Mosher
