I believe that the DLT cleaning cartridges also re-align the heads on the
DLT. I was using a Benchmark DLT1 (DELL Branded) for a couple of months
until the backups just kept failing. I was using a DLT IV cleaning
cartridge. I was told by a support representative that I was experiencing
these problems because I was using the wrong cleaning cartridge!!! I
thought he was crazy. He then explained that the tapes also re-align the
heads on the DLT. I went ahead and ordered a DLT1 cleaning cartridge (not
the brand he recommended) and it works flawlessly now! So, in the case of
tape backup drives I think it is more critical than you might expect.
