Sounds like you saved a file (or several) to the desktop inadvertently,
or you have installed software itself there. My .gnome-desktop only has
small files that contain info on how to find and run applications or
open folders, along with text and icon info - I suspect that most are
fit into the sector in which their directory entry is located.

Just do an ls -l of the directory and see what is sitting there.
