about tape backups

Hello,

I've got a Hewlett-Packard DDS2 drive that has 'hardware compression'.

Well, gzipping my data right away consumes astonishing CPU time, so I
think it might be a good idea to delegate the work to the drive.
BUT: does anyone know wether this LZ derivate is compatible to anything
but itself?
In other words: if something bad happens to my tape drive, will this
render my backups useless? Or is DDS hardware compression standarised?

cu,
Schnobs
