newbee question - (ftp) files and folder rights
Hi list
Googling around didn't give me an answer so I'm hoping som of you gurus
can help:)
I'm runnig an anonymous ftpserver and I'm wondering what is the right
permissions for files and folder.
In ftp's home dir it look's like this:
dr-xr-xr-x 8 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 29 17:24 .
drwxrwsr-x 8 root staff 4096 Apr 27 21:50 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp nogroup 179 Apr 17 21:28 .welcome.msg
d--x--x--x 2 root root 4096 Apr 29 17:24 bin
d--x--x--x 2 root root 4096 Apr 29 17:24 dev
d--x--x--x 2 root root 4096 Apr 29 17:24 etc
drwxr-xr-x 2 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 29 23:09 incoming
d--x--x--x 2 root root 4096 Apr 29 17:24 lib
dr-xr-xr-x 5 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 29 21:44 pub
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 346 Apr 29 17:24 welcome.msg
Do's this look right?
When I log in as anonymous I can cd into pub and download, so far so
good, but is the permission on the folder to high? And what is the
porpuse whith the "." and "..", scould that be the same in the folder
"pub" and subdirs?
When I'm cd into e.g "bin" I can't see anything, so according to the ftp
setup, this is right.
What does "drwxrwsr-x 8 root staff " this permission mean, and is
it possible to set it manually?
In "pub" it looks like this:
dr-xr-xr-x 5 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 29 21:44 .
dr-xr-xr-x 8 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 29 17:24 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp nogroup 259 Apr 23 00:28 .welcome.msg
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp nogroup 179 Apr 23 00:24 .welcome.msg~
drwxr-xr-x 15 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 17 18:16 debian
And in "debian":
drwxr-xr-x 15 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 17 18:16 .
dr-xr-xr-x 5 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 29 21:44 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp nogroup 322497 Dec 31 20:51
46-media_tower.tar.gz
drwxr-xr-x 2 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 17 18:00 crypt
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp nogroup 972800 Feb 9 18:36
flash-linux-5.0.48.tar
drwxr-xr-x 2 ftp nogroup 4096 Apr 17 18:00 howto
and so on down the subdirs.
The purpose whit this is that I'm building up an ftpserver and want the
permission/rights set correctly and staticly (ftp.nogroup) from top
level down the ftp tree.
Any help, samples and/ pointers would be of much gratitude.
Thanks
/ernst
