It might be because there are two drivers. "nv" which is included with Xfree 
and just works and "nvidia" which nvidia provide and which has to be compiled 
against the version of the OS that you have installed. (See XF86Config-4 to 
see which is being used).  If SuSE installed the nv version that is one 
possble reason.  Otherwise, it may be because the precompiled the nvidia 
driver with the version of the kernel they used.
