samba-common package installation problem

Hi,

I'm trying to install samba-common, but during the
preconfiguration debconf fails...
I don't know whether this is a bug of debconf, of
samba or neither, but google showed me that others
have had the same problem (with different packages)
from time to time, but there has never been a solution
(other than "try to purge and reinstall debconf").

This is what dpkg -i prints (DEBCONF_DEBUG set to "developer"):

debconf (developer): starting /tmp/config.25241 configure 2.999+3.0.alpha23-4
debconf (developer): <-- TITLE Samba Server

My system (I hope I've included all interesting numbers):

Kernel: 2.4.20
debconf: 1.2.35
samba-common: 2.999+3.0.alpha23-4
perl: 5.8.0-17

I've also debugged the dpkg-preconfigure perl script to see
where exactly the error occurs (and could post that too, if
it should be of any help), but I don't know perl, so I've
been unable to spot the problem myself.

Please tell me how to solve the problem, or redirect me to
another source of information if this issue is already
well-known...

Thanks in advance,

Jan C. Nordholz
