If I were you, I'd ditch 2.2, and go grab the latest 2.4 kernel, recompile it yourself, and make sure you have the emu10k1 in the kernel. I know this isn't a solution to the problem you're asking, but it most likely will fix your problem, plus 2.2's pretty outdated :) Good luck, sorry I couldn't have been of more help.
