Re: Lost my network
Hi Kevin
I used your excellent "Creating custom kernels with Debian's
kernel-package system" as a guide to compile a new kernel.
I have a PowerMac G4 (Gigabit ethernet) 450Mhz dual processor. It has
been working fine on the LAN using the standard 2.4.18 kernel.
Currently I'm still dual booting (MacOSX) using Yaboot 1.3.8.
I recompiled the kernel for SMP support and after a couple of tries the
new kernel compiled and installed successfully. However, I lost
network connectivity - I couldn't ping the Router which is also the
DHCP server.
After posting my problem to debian-powerpc@lists.debian.org, I happened
across this Debian-User post which solved my problem - I hadn't
included Socket_Filtering in the menuconfig.
So thank you both for your timely intervention ;-) I now have dual
processor support and dhcp-client working.
Regards
Clive

OK. This does appear to be the problem (or at least part of it), that
I don't have the second one (Socket Filtering). Is there an easy way
to put it in, or do I have to compile my kernel from scratch?

In addition to the other suggestions you've received, it's possible
you
didn't include support for DHCP in your kernel. It's in the
'networking
options' section of menuconfig.
This may be misleading to kernel config newbies, since there isn't an
option
for supporting DHCP.
The options are CONFIG_PACKET and CONFIG_FILTER, and they are the
first and
sixth options in the Network options section of the kernel config.
