Doh! See there? I've only been working with Debian for a week, and I've
added a new technique to my kung-fu. Thanks to both nate and Colin! In
eight years of Unix/Linux, I've never run across unescaped shell
expansions tripping me up like that. The presence of kernel* files in
/etc is new as well, and those files have interesting uses...
