i haven't tried what your specifically trying(using a different
kernel source tree then the kernel your using), but you could try
to insmod -f tulip to force it to load. another thing to perhaps
try is install the kernel source for 2.4.18 copy the config file
from /boot and make a new kernel(no need to install or boot it),
so all the headers and stuff should match your running kernel.
