I have never the -d option before, but after your message I read the
manpage and tested it with
mpack -d preferences ultimate.sources.list.1 js@bywoner
from the the /etc/apt directory on "bywoner" and I received mail with
the contents of "preferences" in the body of the message and
"ultimate.sources.list.1" as an attachment.
This seems to be what the manpage had in mind.
